7.3. Rebuild.

"Home is anywhere our family is together."

I have to be right about this. I’m uprooting and moving my family across half the nation so that we can stay together. I’ve been so careful to leave no trails for the dogs to sniff out. Of course, a lump of charcoal where my house used to stand helps the process a little. Sandra was upset about losing all our material possessions but she proved to be more understanding about things than I ever could have hoped for. Dog Show awards, Lyle’s first tooth, or Claire’s perfect attendance award from 2nd grade are small beans in comparison to our lives. The Bennets of Odessa, Texas will vanish off the map. We will now be the unassuming Butlers of Costa Verde, California. It is the only way I can keep them safe. I worked so hard, sometimes, ok, oftentimes, doing the unthinkable just to make sure they were innocent in all of this. I’m not proud of the things I did but I did it for my family.

We have to stay boring and unassuming. We have to live under the radar. I already get a sinking feeling that Claire won’t like this idea much. We are alike in many ways. We may not be biological father and daughter but we might as well be because, lets face it, I don’t like this idea very much either.

Yet, we need to stick to the plan. We have to start fresh and rebuild our lives with new names and a new location. It will be a clean slate.
